All parents know the feeling of scanning a situation for possible danger: exposed outlets, stairs without safety gates, loose bedding in cribs. That’s because moms and dads know one of their most important jobs is ensuring the safety of their children. Unfortunately, not all hazards are easily controlled. No parent wants to think about the possibility of a car crash, but crashes are a leading cause of death for children. In fact, every 34 seconds a child under 13 is involved in a crash. Fortunately, car seats are now safer than ever. In passenger cars, child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers. Car seats work best when used correctly. Most parents feel confident in their car seat installation, but a staggering 59% of seats have not been installed correctly.
September 13-19 is Child Passenger Safety Week. Free car seat inspection events will be held at several locations in Central PA. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be available to offer advice and instruction to parents and caregivers. Working one on one with you, these trained individuals can help you ensure that your most precious cargo is safe and secure in a properly installed car seat.
